Sony Ericsson is dumping the use of Memory Stick Micro cards (M2) in favor of using the standard MicroSD for its future mobile phones.

The new Sony Ericsson Yari, Satio and Aino already feature a MicroSD card slot.

In fact Sony Ericsson Global Marketing Director Fortuné Alexander did say that – “Yes, we are moving in that direction”. This was the other standardization by Sony Ericsson after the decision to adopt the emerging universal charger format (micro USB).

The good: The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 features an interactive panel interface that lets you customize the smartphone to your wants and needs. The Windows Mobile device also has an attractive design and a full QWERTY keyboard.

The bad: Without U.S.-carrier backing, the Xperia X1 has an exorbitant price tag. The navigation controls are difficult to use, and the Web browsing experience wasn’t the greatest.

Looking back at Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 we think there’s one major question to answer. Now, no need to get defensive – the X1 sure is impressive. It goes even further to outperform its main rival – the HTC Touch Pro – in a number of areas and even offers slightly larger display and higher resolution.

However since the QWERTY keyboard is one of the key selling point and the Touch Pro has such great advantage there the choice between the two is really hard. And with the two month advantage that the HTC had we are quite confident that most users have already sealed a deal.

Still the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is a really good device, the purchase of which you are unlikely to regret. It is unable to solve all the usability issues of the underlying Windows OS but if modding and tweaking is your thing, you can achieve quite good results.

And the thumb-optimized X-Panels are quite a treat adding the essential fun element to the XPERIA user experience. We wouldn’t by any means strongly recommend the X1 to non-Windows fans but they might still check it out – steps in the right direction are being taken.

Sony Ericsson will launch PlayNow Arena with movies download as early as this June – adding a latest addition in PlayNow Arena content delivery platform.

Include bundled out-of-the-box for selected mobile phones – debut with the W995 Walkman, launching in Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany and the UK from June 2009 – users will be able to watch up to 60 movies a year.

Users can choose from a selection up to 15 movies at any one time – with additional titles being added to the catalogue each month.

Downloaded movies will be automatically formatted to match the performance of your phone. Experience sublime picture quality, soulful sound and images so sharp you’ll have no trouble reading subtitles and seeing the small details.

This is how PlayNow Arena movies work :

1. Download movies to your computer from www.playnow-arena.com/movies

2. Transfer them to your Sony Ericsson phone by ‘side loading’ them from your computer to your phone using your USB device

3. Watch them as often as you like for up to 90 days. The specially formatted movies are not playable on any other device

4. Choose from a selection of around 15 movies at any one time, with  approximately four additional titles being added to the catalogue each month to replace outgoing content

5. A total of up to 60 movies can be downloaded during a twelve month period

6. The available movie catalogue will be a country-specific mix of classics and  newer titles

On last 28th May, other than announcement of the three latest phones from Sony Ericsson – Satio (Idou), Aino and Yari – this Japanese-Swedish company also make some confirmation to the media about the launching of its own application store.

No specific detail about this, but rumors said Sony Ericsson will make an official announcement about this application store at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco this June.

Sony Ericsson will be the latest manufacture to launch its own application store after Nokia with Ovi store, Apple with Apple store, Android with Android Marketplace and RIM with BlackBerry App World.
