Economy Downturn: Sony Ericsson Needs More Than $135.5 Million or Goodbye

After a bad first-quarter loss in downturn economy crisis and much more bad news, Sony Ericsson will seek a bailout around more than $135.5 million – maybe an injection from its parent company Sony or Ericsson, or even bank-loan – or everything will be in big trouble. Continuity from Q1 losses, Sony Ericsson said to cut one in five jobs this year to gain back the profit.

Sony Ericsson Will Unite Walkman and Cyber-shot Brands?

LONDON – Sony Ericsson plans to drop the flagship Walkman and Cyber-shot brands on its handsets in developed markets such as the UK.
Andre Jacquet, head of global marketing business management, said that the message conveyed by the brand names was no longer relevant. He added that as more consumers sought phones featuring a digital camera, music and internet services, sticking with the Walkman and Cyber-shot names was ‘wrong’.
Sony Ericsson now plans to roll out an ‘Entertainment Unlimited’ proposition, which it said would unite the Walkman and Cyber-shot brands under a single name.
Sony Ericsson launched its first music-focused mobile handsets in 2005. Since then, it has sold more than 100m Walkman-branded phones.
Jacquet claimed local consumers would decide whether there was sufficient demand for the brands to be used in emerging markets. ‘In some countries, having a mobile phone is a big step forward,’ he said.
The manufacturer will continue with the launch of two Walkman handsets this year: the W205 Walkman, and the W995 Walkman.
Next week, the company will unveil its first touch-screen 12-megapixel camera phone with video, games, Google Maps and music services. The handset, called Idou, will go head-to-head with the iPhone.

SE Phone in the Future – Wearable Mobile Phone (Maybe)
Guy at Bilgi Karan (actually that is his name) designed a maybe-in-the-future phone concept of wearable Sony Ericsson. Pretty nice concept of phone designed by him – a phone which is wearable around our neck. There were three buttons only – Busy, Accept and Reject.

www.bilgikaran.comCommunicating with Emotions
Student Work in cooperation with Sony EricssonThis project is an exploration of a whole new approach to mobile communications. It enhances the mobile communication by focusing on the emotional nature of human rather than technology. It is closer to the user physically and psychologically.
It is a personal, friendly object which is wearable around the neck. The user can use the three buttons (Busy, Accept, Reject) to handle the calls. The ‘Accept’ and ‘Reject’ buttons work in the regular fashion while the ‘Busy’ button allows the user to record a message such as ‘I am in a meeting right now’. When pressed during an incoming call, it plays this message to the caller.
It allows the user to adjust the level of availability. There is a slider on the bottom of the device by which the user can adjust this level. It consists of four levels: Offline, Busy, Online and Free. Thanks to this feature, the people can check the availability of their contacts before contacting them.
It also introduces the concept of ‘call priority’. This is a feature which allows callers to set a priority for the call, such as emergency, normal, fun, etc. In return, the peeking display of the device glows with a certain color for certain priority levels when ringing.
The user is alerted by a tactile click, which she feels on her neck rather than a vibration or sound. This click can be customized by the caller for each call, just like knocking on a door. In such cases, the user may understand who is calling without looking at the display.
The interaction is made much easier with the hardware mode sliders. There are modes for each function, phone, messaging, scheduling and contacts.
There are two ‘alert badge’s on the sides of the device which pop out when the user misses a call. It is a physical reminder which eliminates the need to look at the display.

Economy Downturn and Sony Q4 Losses
TOKYO, May 14 (Reuters) – Sony Corp (6758.T) reported a second straight quarterly loss hurt by a firmer yen, sluggish sales and restructuring costs, and forecast a smaller-than-expected annual loss this year.
The operating loss at the maker of PlayStation game consoles and Cyber-shot digital cameras came in at 294.31 billion yen ($3.09 billion) in January-March, down from a 6.18 billion yen profit a year earlier.
Sales at Sony’s mobile phone joint venture with Ericsson (ERICb.ST) fell sharply in the global downturn while the yen’s appreciation and the cost of shedding jobs and closing plants also weighed on the company. Sony vies with Panasonic Corp (6752.T) for the title of the world’s largest consumer electronics maker.
Sony, which competes with Samsung Electronics Co (005930.KS) in LCD TVs and Canon Inc (7751.T) in digital cameras, forecast an operating loss of 110 billion yen for the business year to March 2010.
That compares with a loss of 227.78 billion yen last year and a consensus for a 132.9 billion yen loss in a poll of 20 analysts by Thomson Reuters.
Shares in Sony gained 34 percent from the start of the year to Wednesday, outperforming the Tokyo stock market’s electrical machinery index .IELEC.T, which rose 22 percent.
